What Is a Cigar Band Engagement Ring? Width, Style and Fit
Updated 30 October 2026
A broad band with a flat or gently rounded outer surface defines the cigar band engagement ring. More metal is visible around the centre stone than on a slim solitaire, giving the whole ring a substantial, sculptural shape. The width, band profile and height of the setting all influence how it looks and feels on your hand.
With celebrities like Miley Cyrus embracing bold gold designs, you may have first noticed the style in a photograph. A fitting is a useful next step: it lets you compare the proportions with your usual jewellery and see whether you enjoy wearing a wider band.
At Lily Arkwright, the Regent interprets the style with a 4 mm band and a four-prong solitaire setting. The design was introduced for the Marylebone launch and showcased in our Marylebone flagship showroom. Ask which samples are available before arranging a visit.
How does a wide band change the look?
Compared with classic solitaires with slim bands, a cigar band makes the metal a more prominent part of the design. Look at the ring as a whole: a centre stone can appear differently when it sits above a broad band rather than a fine one. Neither proportion is inherently better.
Width and thickness are different measurements. Width describes how much of the finger the band covers; thickness describes the depth of the metal. The curve of the inside edge and the shape of the outside surface also affect the feel. The Regent's listed profile is a soft flat court, with a rounded comfort-fit interior.

Comparing the pictured Regent styles
The three Regent examples in this guide share a 4 mm band and a four-prong setting, with lab-grown diamond centre stones. The princess-cut and emerald-cut examples are platinum; the oval example is 18k yellow gold. A cigar band does not require one particular diamond shape or metal.
The square outline of a princess cut, the rounded outline of an oval and the straight sides of an emerald cut create different relationships with the broad band. Compare overhead and side views, then consider the complete ring on your hand. If you like the presence of a retro vintage ring but prefer less decoration, a wide solitaire is one option to explore.

Celebrity inspiration: a note on the comparison
When describing Miley Cyrus's engagement ring, we previously used the phrase “bold 18k yellow-gold metalwork and a statement silhouette, all characteristics shared by the cigar band style”. The gold fineness in that description was incorrect: designer Jacquie Aiche confirmed 14k yellow gold to National Jeweler in its 3 December 2025 report. The useful comparison is the broad silhouette, rather than an exact match to a Regent ring.

Is a cigar band right for you?
If you enjoy clean and minimalist jewellery looks, a broad band offers a way to give a simple solitaire more presence. Think about the jewellery you already wear and whether you prefer the metal or the centre stone to be the most noticeable element.
Try a band close to the width you intend to buy. Notice how it passes over your knuckle, how it feels when you close your hand and whether it turns when your hand relaxes. A comfort-fit profile describes the design; it does not replace checking your individual fit. Ask for sizing advice instead of automatically ordering a larger size.

Choosing a metal, centre shape and wedding band
The Regent was designed for the launch of our new Marylebone flagship showroom. Start with the combination you like, then confirm its current specification and the samples available to view.
When comparing shapes such as oval cuts, radiant cuts, and elongated cushion cuts, look at the stone's millimetre dimensions as well as its carat weight. Ask which configurations and band-width options can be supplied rather than assuming every combination is available.
The pictured rings use lab-grown diamonds as their centre stones. Choose the metal colour and diamond shape together, and compare the proportions in ordinary viewing conditions as well as in close-up photographs.
If you plan to wear a wedding band alongside the ring, try both together. Their combined width, the space beneath the engagement-ring setting and any contact between the rings matter. The Regent is described as suitable for most standard wedding bands, but your chosen pairing still needs to be checked.
See the proportions before deciding
Visit our Marylebone showroom or book a virtual appointment to discuss the Regent. Beforehand, ask about the relevant sample, sizing and any requested alterations. A front view, side view and wedding-band comparison will help you make a decision about the complete ring.
