Natural Diamonds, Ethics, and the Kimberley Process

At Lily Arkwright, we understand that choosing the perfect engagement ring is not only a matter of style, but of values. For many, understanding the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds goes far beyond the sparkle. Questions around ethical sourcing, environmental impact and long-standing industry practices are more relevant than ever. So what are natural diamonds, and what does ‘natural diamond’ really mean?

Natural diamonds are gemstones formed deep within the Earth’s crust over the course of one to three billion years. Subjected to intense heat and pressure, they emerge from the Earth after being mined, each one completely unique. For some, the story of a natural diamond’s ancient origin is part of its allure. For others, the environmental and ethical questions surrounding diamond mining raise important concerns.

Are All Mined Diamonds Unethical?

Understandably, many customers ask why mined diamonds are considered problematic. Historically, some diamonds have been linked to conflict zones, often referred to as 'blood diamonds', where sales have funded violence and human rights abuses. This is where the Kimberley Process comes in: a global certification scheme designed to prevent the flow of conflict diamonds. While this was a significant step forward for the industry, the process is not without its flaws.

At Lily Arkwright, we take things a step further. We work exclusively with trusted suppliers who share our commitment to responsible sourcing and transparency. We’re proud to support Global Witness, an organisation that has long challenged the diamond industry to uphold higher standards and ensure ethical supply chains that extend beyond the minimum requirements of the Kimberley Process. We believe our customers deserve to know the full story behind their stone and to feel confident in their choice.

Are Natural Diamonds Worth It?

For some, the answer is a resounding yes. A natural diamond carries with it a sense of legacy, formed in the Earth’s depths long before humans walked upon it. However, the price of mined diamonds often reflects more than just rarity or age. The cost is also shaped by extensive mining operations, long supply chains, and market demand. This is why some customers wonder: why are mined diamonds so expensive?

It’s a fair question. Choosing a natural diamond is about more than cost. It’s about heritage, symbolism, and personal values. At Lily Arkwright, we’re proud to offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds, giving you the freedom to choose the option that speaks to your heart. Where Do Natural Diamonds Come From?

Natural diamonds are primarily found in countries like South Africa, Canada, Russia and Australia. Once extracted, they’re sent for cutting, polishing and certification, often by renowned laboratories such as the GIA or IGI LINK. A common misconception is that all diamonds are mined, or that all GIA diamonds are natural. In actuality, both lab-grown and mined diamonds come both certified or uncertified, with both types of diamonds the trust, traceability, and clarity provided by a trusted certification board is always preferred.

So, are diamonds natural or manmade? The answer depends on the origin. A natural diamond is formed beneath the Earth’s surface over billions of years. A lab-grown diamond, on the other hand, is created over weeks in a high-tech environment using methods that replicate the natural process. Visually and chemically identical, they offer a modern, sustainable alternative.

Choosing Your Diamond: A Personal Journey

At Lily Arkwright, we believe in giving our customers true choice. Whether you are drawn to the timeless story of a natural diamond or prefer the ethical innovation of a lab-grown stone, both are available through our two main engagement ring routes.

Our Natural Diamond Builder is ideal for those who wish to be closely involved in selecting their diamond. Customers can choose their preferred ring setting and browse through a curated collection of stones, with detailed specifications, 360-degree videos, and filters for cut, clarity, colour, carat and price. This route is perfect for anyone who wants to refine their search and make a personal, informed choice.

Alternatively, our 'Browse All Styles' option allows you to choose a complete ring where the diamond has already been selected by our expert team. These pre-set designs are far from generic. The diamonds we choose for these rings are carefully evaluated for their beauty, cut and brilliance, with clarity grades of VS2 to VS1 and certifications from IGI or GIA. This approach is perfect for those who trust our expertise and prefer a simpler, less time-intensive process.

Going Beyond the Kimberley Process

Ethical sourcing has been at the heart of Lily Arkwright since day one. Beyond working only with responsible suppliers, we actively give back. Every Black Friday, instead of running sales, we donate to UNICEF to support children and vulnerable communities. Through our Social Champions programme, we make monthly donations to causes chosen by our customers and team members. We believe luxury should always be aligned with integrity.

Key to this pledge is our support of Global Witness, an organisation committed to dismantling corruption and promoting ethical supply chains across the diamond industry. While the Kimberley Process has made strides in removing conflict diamonds from the market, we believe in holding ourselves to an even higher standard.
