Guide to Princess Cut Moissanite Gemstones

Created: August 01, 2018

Princess Cut

The second most popular cut after the brilliant round, the regal princess cut is perfectly square and effortlessly chic. This gemstone cut is the best choice for light, glamorous and stylish moissanite engagement rings.

The princess cut as it is known today was first carved by Israel Itzkowitz in 1979, and has been appreciated ever since for its graceful shape. The geometric design and strong lines of this cut make it an elegant and contemporary choice. Also known as a square modified brilliant, here at Lily Arkwright we offer a wide range of princess cut rings. All of our jewellery is Assay Assured, and we have free and insured global shipping across all of our ranges.

Take a look at our collection of lab created princess cut moissanite rings to compare square cuts.

  • Shape: perfectly square when viewed from above, the princess cut is often described as an inverted pyramid when looked at in profile.
  • Facets: 58
  • Style: this modern and chic cut is immensely popular because of its ability to give off excellent fire and brilliance.
  • Cut Grading: the princess cut's large number of facets and its pyramid shape make it one of the best cuts for brightness. Dispersing light throughout all four corners, this shape gives off a delightful shine.

Princess cut gems and square cuts are often the same. This is because the term ‘princess cut’ is a trademark, so you’ll find identical square engagement rings named simply ‘square’ or ‘square modified brilliant’.

The princess cut is similar to other square cuts, including the rounded cushion cut and rectangular radiant cut. However, these other square cuts often have different length ratios making them more rectangular in shape rather than square. For a gem to be a true princess cut it must have a 1.00 to 1.05 ratio along its sides. The Princess cut is also known to be one of the most efficient gemstone styles, using up around 80% of a rough stone compared to 60% for a brilliant round.

All of our jewellery comes with a 12 month warranty and complimentary free resizing, guaranteeing sure that your moissanite engagement ring or lab diamond engagement ring is of the highest quality and fits perfectly.

Princess Cut Moissanite Gemstone Style

Kate Bosworth’s princess cut engagement ring is inspired by 1920s art deco design. It’s a very cool design, featuring a simple platinum band with a large princess cut gem held by four prongs. She wears it above a simple platinum wedding band, similar to our Harper Channel Set Platinum Eternity band, studded with Charles & Colvard moissanite.

Emily Ratajkowski also opted for a princess cut gemstone in her engagement ring, which sits alongside another diamond that is pear shaped. Set in a gold band, this unusual ring is stunning.

The square shape of the princess cut makes it ideal for sitting alongside other square or rectangle gems to create a detailed, gem-encrusted look. It also works wonderfully as a simple centrepiece.

Take a look at our simple solitaire moissanite engagement rings, like the 1.7ct moissanite princess cut Rosalee in rose gold, as seen on the Hitched website, with a four prong tapered mount designed to let as much light in from the sides and through the centre stone as possible. This serves to illuminate the facets and gives a delightful shine.

The Eden is a gorgeous design, inspired by nature with vine-like detailing on the band and is a twist on the classic solitaire. This ring is for those who want a delicate and refined option with some modern variation, and pairs wonderfully with the Ivy eternity band.

Another of the beautiful princess cuts is the Hope ring. Vintage-inspired and secured in a four claw setting this ring is designed to create breathtaking sparkle. Embellished with milgrain detailing, a row of round cut diamonds are set in an alternating marquise and round pattern along this ring’s shoulders.

The Coco is one of our more extravagant rings, featuring a triple pavé setting along its shoulders and a hidden halo of diamonds that can be seen around the basket when viewed from the side. This luxurious ring really is breath-taking when set with a princess cut moissanite gemstone.
