Buying guide

A closer look at oval natural diamonds

An oval natural diamond brings a continuous curved outline to an elongated shape. The individual stone's proportions and light pattern deserve particular attention: two ovals can have similar carat weights but noticeably different characters. Choose the outline you enjoy, not simply the longest measurement available.

Understand the length-to-width ratio

The ratio describes how slender or full an oval appears; it is not a quality grade. Compare it with the actual length and width in millimetres to understand both shape and scale. A fuller oval may feel balanced on one band, while a narrower centre can create a more directional composition on another.

Assess the centre in movement

Oval diamonds can show a darker, bow-tie-shaped area across the centre. Its visibility changes with the individual diamond, lighting and viewing angle. Examine video or view the selected stone in person where possible, rather than relying on a single still image. The grading report and the visible light pattern answer different questions.

Choose the setting around the stone

Review the basket height, claw positions and band width together. The broader natural diamond solitaire range offers simpler compositions, while hidden halo designs introduce detail beneath the centre. Check the actual specification because a hidden halo does not automatically mean a high or low setting.

What alternatives have a similar sense of length?

Compare elongated cushion natural diamond rings for a more structured curve, or pear shaped natural diamond rings for a tapered point. Once the silhouette is clear, our consultation service can help refine the metal, diamond specification and wedding-band fit.
