Princess cut gems and square cuts are often the same. This is because the term ‘princess cut’ is a trademark, so you’ll find identical square engagement rings named simply ‘square’ or ‘square modified brilliant’.

The princess cut is similar to other square cuts, including the rounded cushion cut and rectangular radiant cut. However, these other square cuts often have different length ratios making them more rectangular in shape rather than square. For a gem to be a true princess cut it must have a 1.00 to 1.05 ratio along its sides. The Princess cut is also known to be one of the most efficient gemstone styles, using up around 80% of a rough stone compared to 60% for a brilliant round.
