Choosing birthstone jewellery

Check the stone identity behind the association

Birthstone traditions provide a starting point for a gift, but the product specification determines the gemstone you are buying. Aquamarine Blue Sapphire is sapphire in an aquamarine-like colour; Morganite Pink Sapphire is also a sapphire palette. A colour resemblance does not make either stone the mineral that inspired its name.

Make the gift practical as well as personal

Compare the selected gemstone’s care needs and the piece’s dimensions, metal and fittings. For earrings, check the pair and backing; for pendants, check chain inclusion and length; for rings, confirm sizing. Ask for clarification where the month association and the product material are not the same.

Birthstone Jewellery FAQs

What matters most when choosing birthstone jewellery?

Birthstone jewellery can make a thoughtful gift, especially when the gemstone colour holds personal meaning. We'd suggest starting with the recipient's favourite jewellery style and metal, then checking the stone traditionally associated with their birth month. Some months have more than one accepted birthstone, so there's room for personal choice. It's worth looking at the actual gemstone and design rather than feeling bound to a particular tradition.

How should I check the size and fit of birthstone jewellery?

For birthstone jewellery, we'd compare practical details as well as the symbolism. A necklace needs the right chain length, earrings should suit the wearer's preferred scale and a ring needs a comfortable size. A close-up can make a small stone look quite different from how it appears on the body. If you're buying a gift, the recipient's existing jewellery is often the most useful reference.

How do I look after birthstone jewellery in regular use?

Different birthstones belong to different mineral families, so we wouldn't recommend the same cleaning method for all of them. Some are relatively hard, while others are more sensitive to knocks, chemicals or heat. We'd follow care guidance for the actual gemstone and keep the piece separately from harder jewellery when stored. Fastenings and settings should be checked too, particularly if it's worn every day.
