Why choose a green diamond ring

A green diamond ring is one of the most individual choices in fine jewellery. Green is rarely seen in diamonds, and a green diamond engagement ring has a fresh, natural quality that sets it completely apart from a traditional ring. The colour runs from a soft mint or seafoam through to a deeper forest green, with the lighter shades feeling delicate and contemporary and the deeper greens carrying real presence. It suits someone who wants something genuinely uncommon.

The most famous green diamonds

The most famous green diamond is the Dresden Green, a 41 carat apple green stone that probably came from the Golconda mines of India and has been in Dresden, Germany for more than two centuries. It is the largest natural green diamond known, and it narrowly escaped the 2019 Green Vault burglary only because it was on loan to the Metropolitan Museum in New York at the time. The Aurora Green, a 5.03 carat fancy vivid green, set a record when it sold at Christie's in 2016.

Green has also reached the wider public through modern engagement rings, including the green diamond ring Ben Affleck gave Jennifer Lopez. These famous stones are natural and rare beyond reach, but they are why green carries such fascination, and that colour is now achievable as a lab grown stone.

What gives a green diamond its colour

Green is unusual among diamond colours because it comes from radiation rather than a trace element. As the stone sits underground over millions of years, natural radiation from nearby minerals such as uranium knocks carbon atoms out of place in the crystal, and this makes the diamond absorb other colours and reflect green. The same green can be achieved in the laboratory during the controlled growth and treatment of the stone. Despite being formed this way, green diamonds are not radioactive and are completely safe to wear.

Why lab grown makes sense for green

Natural green diamonds are among the rarest colours of all, and a mined green of any real colour is both extremely scarce and extremely expensive. A lab grown green diamond ring offers that distinctive colour with a clear, traceable origin and at a price that makes it a realistic choice rather than a museum piece. Lab grown diamonds are created in advanced laboratories using the same processes that form diamonds within the earth. The result is a real diamond, with the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a mined stone, the only difference being its origin. Each diamond is grown under controlled conditions, which makes it fully traceable and conflict free, and removes the environmental impact of mining.

Choosing the shape and setting

Cushion and radiant cuts tend to deepen and concentrate a green colour, while round and oval brilliants keep the focus on sparkle. The colour is graded for how strong and even the green reads, alongside cut, clarity and carat weight. Against yellow gold a green diamond reads soft and earthy, while platinum or white gold makes it crisper and more defined. A halo of colourless diamonds brightens the stone and emphasises the green at its centre, and shoulder set and trilogy designs add brilliance along the band.
