Choosing earrings

Use measurements to assess presence

Check the full dimensions of each earring and, for stone-set pairs, the per-stone measurements. Pair total weight does not establish the size of one stud. Consider projection, basket depth and the amount of metal visible around the stones.

Choose the fitting for your wear

Confirm the post, backing or other closure used by the selected design. Ask about the pair’s weight if comfort is a priority. Different stone materials and settings need appropriate care; inspect loose fittings rather than continuing to wear them.

Earrings FAQs

What matters most when choosing fine jewellery earrings?

We'd think first about when the earrings will be worn. Delicate studs can be especially comfortable for everyday use, while hoops and drops create more movement and presence. The dimensions and fastening matter as much as the gemstone or design. We recommend looking at a worn-on-ear image, where available, because studio close-ups can make a small pair appear much larger than it actually is.

How should I check the size and fit of fine jewellery earrings?

Earring fit is more about the overall scale, weight and fastening than a conventional size. We'd check the post or clasp and the length of any drop, particularly if the recipient prefers lightweight jewellery. If you're buying a gift, their existing earrings can offer a useful guide to the style and proportions they enjoy. A secure backing is especially important for precious gemstone earrings.

How do I look after fine jewellery earrings in regular use?

Earring posts and backs deserve regular attention, particularly for a pair worn most days. We'd suggest storing the earrings separately to avoid rubbing the stones or scratching the metal. Clean them gently with a method suitable for the actual gemstone and finish. If a clasp feels loose or the setting catches, it's worth having it checked before you wear the earrings again.
