ABOUT YOUR CENTRE DIAMOND
Lab-grown alexandrite gemstones
A lab-grown alexandrite offers a different approach to colour because its appearance can change with the surrounding light.
Rather than being defined by one fixed hue, alexandrite can move between purple and bluish tones depending on the lighting conditions. That variation becomes part of the character of the gemstone and the finished ring.
Understanding lab-grown alexandrite
Alexandrite is the colour-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl.
A lab-grown alexandrite is created under controlled conditions rather than formed naturally within the earth. It remains distinct from sapphire and from other gemstones that may also display colour-changing effects.
When comparing jewellery, identify the centre gemstone itself rather than relying only on the description of its colour change.
Understanding the colour change
Alexandrite can appear green or bluish green in some lighting and warmer red or purplish red in others.
The strength and character of that change can vary between individual gemstones.
This means a single photograph cannot communicate the full appearance. Consider imagery taken under different lighting conditions where available and decide whether you enjoy both sides of the colour change.
Designing around changing colour
Because alexandrite does not present exactly the same colour in every environment, the surrounding metal becomes particularly interesting.
Platinum or white gold provides a neutral, cool-toned frame. Yellow gold introduces warmth, while rose gold creates another relationship with the gemstone’s warmer appearance.
Consider how the setting works with both colour states rather than judging it from one image alone.
Shape and setting
A round alexandrite gives the centre a compact, balanced appearance. An oval creates a more elongated silhouette, while pear, cushion and angular outlines offer different proportions.
A solitaire places the colour change at the centre of the design. A halo creates a consistent frame around it, while a trilogy introduces side stones that remain visually stable as the centre colour changes.
Alexandrite for an engagement ring
Alexandrite is well suited to jewellery intended for regular wear, although appropriate care is still required.
Consider the height of the setting, protection around the gemstone and the way the ring will sit alongside a wedding band.
A Lily Arkwright lab-grown alexandrite ring is defined not by one colour alone, but by the way the gemstone changes as the light around it changes.
