Moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are different gemstones

Moissanite is made of silicon carbide, whereas diamond is crystalline carbon. A laboratory-grown diamond has essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as a natural diamond. Moissanite has a different composition and structure, so it should not be described as a lab-grown diamond or a type of diamond.

The distinction is between material and origin. Two gemstones can both be laboratory-grown without being the same material. Whether you are comparing moissanite with a white or coloured lab-grown diamond, identify the gemstone first rather than relying on a similar appearance or a shared description of how it was created.

Naturally occurring moissanite is extremely rare. The moissanite used in contemporary fine jewellery is therefore normally laboratory-grown, providing crystals that can be cut and polished into jewellery gemstones.

Understanding moissanite’s sparkle

Moissanite disperses light more strongly than diamond, producing pronounced flashes of spectral colour known as fire. These rainbow flashes are part of the way the gemstone interacts with light. They are different from the body colour that makes a gemstone itself blue, pink or yellow.

This gives you a useful starting point when comparing appearances. Consider whether you enjoy a lively display of coloured flashes, rather than expecting moissanite to reproduce a diamond’s appearance in every respect.

View the gemstone in motion as well as in still photographs. Compare it under softer lighting and more direct light, and consider the overall impression rather than a single bright reflection. The aim is to choose a sparkle you enjoy in the settings where you will actually wear the jewellery.

Understanding colour and clarity descriptions

Hardness is not the same as resistance to every kind of damage, however, and it does not mean that a gemstone or its setting is unbreakable.
