Finding balance in an elongated cushion diamond

An elongated cushion natural diamond brings a longer silhouette to the rounded corners of a cushion cut. It can appeal to someone seeking a little more structure than an oval, without the straighter edges of an emerald or radiant cut. The best starting point is the individual outline rather than a preferred carat weight in isolation.

Ratio describes shape, not quality

Length divided by width gives a useful comparison of how elongated two diamonds are. It does not grade their cutting or determine how attractive they will look. Consider the ratio alongside the actual millimetre measurements, the curve of the corners and the distribution of reflections across the centre.

View the diamond rather than a generic example

Facet patterns can vary within the elongated cushion description. Ask which images show the selected diamond and which illustrate the ring design. Review the grading information and view the stone in movement where possible; this helps you distinguish the appearance of the individual centre from the appeal of the setting.

Compare neighbouring silhouettes

Cushion cut natural diamond rings provide a reference for fuller proportions. Oval natural diamond rings offer a continuous curved outline, while radiant cuts introduce more defined corners. The comparison is most useful at similar physical dimensions rather than simply matching weight.

How should I choose the surrounding band?

Look at how far the centre extends beyond the shoulders and how its basket meets the band. A fine band can emphasise the stone, but setting height and wedding-band clearance still need checking.
